Chatfield decreased to 80cfs at 11:30am Saturday, August 19, 2023. Sixx was surfed Friday at low flow but the Chatty drop to 80cfs will essentially take the surf out of Sixx, Chiclets, and Beavers and 16th to a point. Though the desperate surfers might hit Beavers anyway (it was surfed early Saturday) or Dave’s Wave

After much research, failed attempts for change of status quo, and self-reflection; I have decided to refrain from knowingly promoting river surfing due to river surfing’s unwittingly and knowingly negligent use of unsafe gear (in particular the use of quick release leashes and improperly designed personal floatation devices for river surfing). Quick Release Leashes Are

Check Beavers, Chiclets, and Dave’s Wave for possible surf. Will do a weekend forecast later tonight or early tomorrow. LBK

Really?!? We need a VFMP (Voluntary Flow Management Program) to coordinate back up these releases and then schedule drops of recreational (surfable) flows that will also help flush the river for the fish and wildlife dependent on the S Platte. Tonight is the Pocket Wave 2.0 public meeting in BV at 7pm. Hope to see

Chatty to 130cfs today…. Death by a thousand cuts, errr make that “death by just not enough cfs for Sixx” except for “mad dogs and Englishmen in the hot sun”… Chiclets might green up later today.. Beavers gets a tad better (see the pic of Mr. Mike surfing Beavers yesterday). Dave’s was surfed yesterday but

Chatty will remain at 100cfs today Tuesday for some local surf but just missing Sixx…. Monsoons are south of us today but might move up into Denver area Wed to Friday… Crossing our fingers. Last year we got a late release of water; so we hope, the farmers are creatures of habit and will be

Hmmmm… How jonesing are you to surf? Will help out with Beavers Wave and 16th and Dave’s, though not sure if Sixx will be surfable at all (keep an eye on RRP gauge and the cam). Working with CPW on the Scout Wave pfd enforcement. Good conversations had with the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA)

These low multi-day partial releases are a prime example of why the S Platte River needs some sort of recreational/environmental Voluntary Flow Management Program (VFMP) like the Arkansas Head Water Recreation Area does for the Arkansas River (BV and Salida). Speaking of Salida…. See pic below at Scout yesterday with CPW law enforcement officer giving

“WE ARE CONCERNED THAT THE PFD REQUIREMENTS TO SURF THE SCOUT WAVE WILL SET BAD PRECEDENTS FOR RIVER SURFING STATEWIDE IN COLORADO…. This is not just a local issue to the Scout Wave in Salida!” On 8/11/2023 the Colorado Park and Wildlife (CPW) posted up signs at Scout Wave with requirements for Coast Guard Approved

Same as yesterday. Possible rain on the radar. Park Rangers at Scout are checking for Coast Guard Approved pfd’s for surfing. Not tickets Saturday issued, just warnings. Have a back up pfd with Coast Guard labels if you are going to surf Scout from here out. LBK
