Chatty Stays 700cfs (Sixx??)

The main reservoir release gate will remain at 700 cfs, and the fish hatchery will remain at 5 cfs today, Wednesday, July 3, 2024.

RRP: Sixx looks almost surfable on the cam despite being at 850cfs or more at the wave. Currents and swims are a bit more tricky and difficult at this high flow for Sixx, so be cautious and know your limits and surfing stamina. Big Benni’s is surfable but with big swims that at times will carry you down through Chiclets. Be safe and go feet up through Chiclets and if going over the rocks, pre-release that QR leash before you go over the rocks. Better yet shoot for the center of Chiclets and give a verbal shout if you suspect anyone (kayaker, surfer) is on the wave and cover your head and face!

Chiclets might be a bit out of control to surf but worth a look.

Other Denver Spots: Trestles was surfed yesterday and Bingo is surfable. Advise not going alone to these and other surf spots.

Scout: Scout is still no joke at over 2,000cfs with hold downs and recently three NDE’s due to leash entanglements when boards got stuck on top of the wall at the step down from the jump-off higher step. This happened on both sides of the wave. If you are going to surf Scout with a leash, you had better have very good muscle memory via practice/practice/practice to actually be able to find and deploy the release mechanism.

Pueblo: Surf is up at Levee waves 3 and 4. P-town new wave is officially not open until the construction completion and “commissioning” of the whitewater park that is estimated to happen this fall. Just because others are surfing the new wave doesn’t mean it is a green light to surf. Be aware, be safe, and know to stay away from any active construction.

River Surrfing Tip: Surfing Stamina…. Flow keeps a coming in most surf spots in Colorado, so be safe and know your limits and watch your surfing stamina to know when it is time to end your surf session.

Indication of time to wrap it up include but are not limited to: falling more/sooner; starting to miss jump ons or popups; longer swims; longer hold-downs; shivering; cramping; headache; feeling dehydrated or exhausted from the sun; and making Wilbur Kookmeyer’ish mistakes.

Be honest with yourself for when it is time to stop surfing or skip surfing. This includes being honest w/ your equipment and if you can really deploy your leash in an abrupt entanglement with you being forced underwater despite wearing a pfd or not.
