Chatty to 600cfs (5yr Anniversary of Wave Sixx)

The main reservoir gate release will increase from 425 cfs to 600 cfs between 12:00-1:00pm, and the fish hatchery will remain at 5 cfs today, Sunday, June 9, 2024.

Sixx will be on the fluffy edge of surfable starting later this afternoon. Benni’s becomes “Big Benni’s” and the spot to surf but use caution and if you get flushed over Chiclets, try to go center of that wave. If you are going over the side rocks of Chiclets, pre-release that leash (better yet don’t use a leash) and go on your back feet up over the rocks. Your board will stay likely in the eddies of Chiclets. Board’s flushed further down river from Chiclets can be safely chased down from the river banks. Be safe and have fun and please keep an eye on your fellow river surfers!

LBK’s first surf at Wave Sixx June 9th 2019

River Surfing History: Five years ago the metro-Denver river surfing scene got Wave Sixx as an late addition wave to the other surfable waves that were originally built at River Run Park on the S Platte River (Benni’s and Chiclets). After Wave Sixx was deemed safe and fully opened to the public, Wave Sixx increased the number of surfable days easily by tenfold at RRP and took over as the main got to performance wave at RRP when the flow is below 650cfs.

Wave Sixx’ skateboard ramp feel, despite being in a low flow river, has become an inspiration for other truly green-faced smooth and fast more vertical performance waves in Colorado such as Scout Wave and Pueblo’s New Wave, and beyond in other US states and countries abroad.

The origins of name for “Wave Sixx” comes from the tongue-in-cheek response to kayak waveparks using numbers for their waves such as 1, 2, 3…. Problem is, how do waves get numbered? Pueblos numbers come from up river entering their wavepark as in the first encountered drop is number 1, next is number 2, next is number 3…. RRP drops are numbered backwards going up river and makes no sense as is Wave Sixx “drop 1” or “drop 6”???

In the end Wave Sixx was kept officially as drop 6 but to make fun of the confusion caused, the river surfers named the wave “Wave Sixx” (w/ two “x’s) after Nikki Sixx, the co-founder of that horrible big hair 80’s heavy metal band Mötley Crüe.

Some will call Wave Sixx “Nikki’s” or “Sixxx” (w/ three extra “x’s” but DON’T call it “number 6” or “drop 6” because that would mean Chiclets is number 1 and Benni’s is number 2 and when somebody says “I’m going to number 2” that either means they are going to surf Benni’s or going to take “a poopie”, “a dump”, or “a shit”?!?

Now you know… Go surf but be safe!
