After the main gate was briefly closed from 10:30am to 12:00pm, for the USACE safety inspection of the conduit today, the main reservoir gate release will be set to 375 cfs at 12:00pm, and the fish hatchery will remain at 5 cfs today, Friday, June 7, 2024.
Things will be strange at RRP today and will see the waves go flat for maybe a couple of hours. The flow will come back and RRP waves should be surfable mid to later in the afternoon. Wave Sixx will be real fun as we will be getting 375cfs hitting us that is 50cfs more than yesterday. Hopefully this is signs for a good weekend of surf at Sixx!
NDE: Yesterday their was apparently a near death experience (NDE) at high flow Scout Wave when a surfer attempted to cross over the top of the wave to the “sunny side” (aka goofy footer side) and their board went one way and the surfer the other way on the top of the wave. See pic of spot where it happened. The surfer was pulled under and likely only survived when their leash broke. I would like to speak with the surfer and will keep their name anonymous like I have done with other surfers experiencing NDE’s while river surfing. Anyone with details, please contact me in person or by e-mail on the contact The Denver Surf Report sub-page.

Remember, the way you surf one wave does not necessarily mean you can surf it the same way as another wave. Even one spot will be a completely different wave with different hazards when the flow changes dramatically and sometimes even when it changes only slightly. Approach each river surfing session with caution, sit back before just jumping on and observe how the wave looks and for any hazards in the wave or downstream and above. Watch others who are surfing and note any dangers. Ask for advice from experienced rive surfers at the wave you are about to surf. Be safe, WHEN IN DOUBT, DON’T GOT OUT!
RRP: Wave Sixx was shaped steep yesterday so it may collapse as the flow drops and goes back up as people fall on it or surf just the center. Wait 10-20 seconds and it should start to green up. There will be a waveshaper volunteer out there later today if needed and on call for it this weekend. Benni’s should be challenging fun. Chiclets should be excellent. Again there will be a couple hours of no surf but will come back in later in the afternoon.
Scout Wave: Has blown out and there is a strainer (tree) in the wave. They sand bagged the walls taller at about 3,000cfs and it was apparently an amazing head high wave; however when the flow went up higher last night, the wave collapsed into a crumbly violent messy wave. Will have to wait for the wave to come back in on lower flows.
Pueblo Waves: The flow is over 3,000cfs down that way. P-town’s New Wave likely is blown out but that needs to be confirmed. The Levee Park Waves should be amazing today and over the weekend, however, know your limits when surfing these high flows and fully scope out the wave, eddy lines, paddle out spots, hazards and walk way down past the waves to note any hazards and safe passages around and out of the river.
Pueblo Levee Walk Event is this Sat June 8th 7:30am to noon. If it is safe to surf, and I am told the waves should be amazing at the Levee whitewater park, go put on a surfing show for the event. If the waves are too much and not safe for your abilities, “Plan B” is to walk up river form the waves to check out the murals on the levee, then drive up to the New Wave near the Pavilion and ballfields at City Park to go take a look at the New Wave and take pics of it, and then go grab some grub in town maybe at the river walk area. Pueblo is a growing surf town that us out-of-towner surfers can help expand upon the stoke of the Pueblo surf scene. Info on Levee Walk 2024- https://pueblodowntown.com/events/pueblo-levee-walk-2/
Golden Waves: The flow is over 900cfs so the surf is up if you know the spots. Rodeo Hole looked real good for bodyboarding. Bingo Wave should be up but go with someone who knows how to surely safe that wave at higher flows. Again, scope the waves out including way down river and IF IN DOUBT, DON’T GO OUT.
G-Wood: Not my gig, though those who have the right boards and skills, it is amazing. For me, I will watch the G-wood live cam in awe of those able to surf it and brave the high flows. Here is the G-wood live cam link- https://coloradowebcam.net/camera/glenwood-kayak-park-wave-zoom-webcam
Be patient today and you will be rewarded with good surf.. Also be safe.
