The main reservoir release gate will be decreased from 500 to 400 cfs, and the fish hatchery will remain at 5 cfs today, Friday, May 31, 2024.
Get ready for one of the favorite flows out of Chatfield at 400cfs for Sixx. Apparently the gate change was made at the dam at 11:30am. Will take a couple of hours to see the change at Sixx. Might need a slight tune for Sixx but usually the flap attack angle is about the same. Weather prediction model on OpenSnow shows no rain over RRP, but later today seems there are possible strong storms like late yesterday to the east of us to keep an eye out for.
Board Deal: Check the Colorado River Surfer FB page. Ward is letting a 5’2″ Scott Burke Fish (the older white model with stronger pop-thru fins) go for a C-note that is well worth the price. That board by-far is the best newbie board for Sixx, Benni’s, Scout, P-town new wave, etc.
River Surfing Tips: Put your phone number on your board(s) so if you lose a board, maybe somebody will give you a call. Just read a story about a Bomb Drop softie that got away from someone at Scout Wave to then get a call for a return of the lost board.
Today is “Dam Safety Awareness Day” so take a moment to learn about low head dams. Technically the river waves we surf are classified as recreational use low head dams. Not all low head dams are surfable and can be deadly drowning machines. Even a spot you surf at one flow can become a dangerous low head dam at higher flows. Know before you go surf by checking for the recommended surfable flows, talking to the locals, scoping out the wave by taking time to observe it and downstream for any hazards both in the flow/wave-shape/eddys/strainers/etc. If in doubt don’t go out.
