Chatty to 800cfs

The main reservoir release gate will be decreased from 900 to 800 cfs today, Thursday, May 23, 2024. The fish hatchery will remain at 5 cfs.

Surf is happening and there are events to check out in June, so calendar them if you can..

RRP:

  • Big Benni’s is still the best place to surf in the local area. It might need a slight tune or maybe not as we drop from 900 to 800 out of Chatfield. Surf session will be happening 4pm at Benni’s today.
  • Sixx is blown out.
  • Chiclets is a whitewater hole but can be surfed well on bodyboards and surfmats.
  • June 15th, International Surf Day local gathering at RRP TBD.

Miracle Wave (Chatfield State Park):

  • Miracle Wave just falls out of surfable range at about 800cfs. Not saying you can’t but it will difficult.

Pueblo:

  • P-Town New Wave is apparently “open on weekends” and looks oddly the same as Scout where you want to surf it via a quiver in the car just in case it is too flat for one board over the other. We are not sure about the flow range as the wave is so brand new. So far it has been surfed from about 750cfs up to 1,200cfs. Caution, if heavy equipment is in the river on or down from the new wave, do not attempt to surf it. Here is the gauge for P-town New Wave… https://dwr.state.co.us/Tools/Stations/ARKMOFCO?params=DISCHRG
  • June 8th, Pueblo Levee Walk surf session. Bob from The Edge surf and paddle shop in Pueblo is making a call-out for a contingency of river surfers to hit waves 3 and maybe 4 during the Pueblo Levee walk event that runs from 8am to noon. Pueblo would benefit from showing off river surfing for those waves that need to be eventually upgraded. Here is the info on the Pueblo Levee Walk (note, local Denver river surfer Shane Lamb has a cool mural on the levee he did there couple years ago).. https://pueblodowntown.com/events/pueblo-levee-walk-2/
  • June 15th, International Surf Day local gathering at Pueblo TBD.

Salida (Scout):

  • Scout Wave is looking fun to surf despite people saying it is flatter. It is a bit different than it was last year at the same higher flows, so bring your quiver of boards to figure out what works. Seems that the power of the wave requires a top to bottom approach and hard turns from the get go instead of just standing in one place that will flush you out.
  • June 14th 11:00AM (Friday) Surf Contest in Salida at wave TBD “pending water level”. Don’t know much more about this surf contest such as entry fee, waivers, gear required, etc. Here is the FIBArk info page on their annual whitewater festival that starts late Wed June 12th and goes thru Sun June 16th, including their surf contest on Friday the 14th…. https://www.fibark.com/whitewater-festival
  • June 15th, International Surf Day local gathering at Scout TBD. Yeah, yeah, yeah, we know it is the same weekend of FIBArk whitewater festival but go surf Scout on Sat 15th and pick up some trash and celebrate surfing as an informal add-on to FIBArk.
