Demand Surfable Waves at Reynolds Landing River Project (e-mail USACE Comments by 6/8/2024)

Duty now for the Future… Please email a comment to the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) requesting surfable features at Reynolds Landing in the S. Platte River in Littleton near the Breckenridge Brewery. USACE is requesting public comment by June 8, 2024 on the permit request for the Reynolds Landing river restoration project. On January 10th, 2024, the Littleton Independent newspaper wrote a story on the revitalization of the stretch of river at Reynolds Landing. This particular quote by Kelsey Stansfield, manager of grounds, open space and natural resources for the City of Littleton in the news story leaves some concerns about the surfability of the waves in the design plans…

“It’s not something that you see a lot along the South Platte River,” she said. “There’s been a lot of redesigns that really promote whitewater sports … We really wanted to do something different with this project and just attract a more diverse group of people.”.. Kelsey Stansfield

We need to keep a close eye on the Reynolds Landing river restoration project. Already we have lost out on other river projects in and around Metro Denver and Colorado to “bunk” un-surfable wave builds.

In December 2022, it was cited in the City of Littleton’s funding agreement of the Reynolds Landing restoration project to include recreation accommodations for tubers, kayakers, rafters, SUP, and surfers. Also in the same funding agreement and in applications to the U.S. Army Corps Of Engineers, river waves are cited in the concept design plans as well.

Let’s hold the City of Littleton, their funding partners, and the permitting agencies to building actually surfable waves at Reynolds Landing.

HOW TO COMMENT:

In your own words e-mail the USACE at section408nwo@usace.army.mil referencing in the subject line “Comment for Project 408-NWO-2022-0071” and in the e-mail body stating that you support the Reynolds Landing river restoration project, but the river waves must remain as part of the project and that the river waves must be surfable….. It would be good to add in that; the project also must be transparent to include input from the river surfing community in all phases for design, selection of contractors, and review of ongoing construction; as it has all too often been the case that river waves built have not been as promised for recreational use, environmental use, and safety. The end result is, only with the river surfer community actively involved, river waves can be built that are usable, safe, and in harmony with the environment of the river.

Draft up your e-mail to the Army Corps asap and send it off now so it is in before June 8th.

  1. Sent & forwarded to friends, thanks for sharing.

I’m in Bend for the next 3 months representing Denver. Everyone is impressed with the acid drop in – nobody does it here. My reply is “That’s the only way I know how to do it!”

  2. Email sent off to them! Looks like a cool project, definitely a need for a surfable wave there. We will see what we hear back!
