No change at Chatfield today. The main reservoir release gate will remain at 110 cfs, and the fish hatchery will remain at 5 cfs today, Friday, April 19, 2024.
Bummers, was hoping for more flow out of Chatfield. The rain today/tonight likely turns into snow Sat and back to rain. Sixx will be surfable with the cold water bump. Need a 5/4 wetsuit w/ hoody, thick booties and thick gloves to jump in the river today or tomorrow. Sunday you might be able to brave it with a 4/3 after the river temp climbs out of the 40’s into the 50’s probably not till later in the day. Only can guess how the flow holds this weekend or if Chatty bumps up but kind of doubt a Chatty increase.
RRP: Sixx was barely surfable yesterday w/ flow hovering just at or below 130cfs but nobody braved the drop in air temp, cold rain and frigid water temp that never got above the upper 40° mark. Same will remain for today but might see a slight increase in native flow. Keep an eye of the cam and the indicators. The RRP gauge is not too accurate these days. Scout: Tony posted up a vid on FB surfing Scout at 270ish cfs on his low flow board the other day. He always makes it look so smooth and easy surfing Scout. The wave out there is surfing similar to last year’s low flow despite the new fish ladder/boat chute. Looking like the larger back pool they built over the past few months is so far compensating for the water pulled from the main drop (the wave) into the ladder/chute. Hope this works for higher flows. Only time will tell. Might get some feedback from people surfing Scout this weekend.
Pueblo’s New Wave: Recent FB vids of the last drop at the new whitewater park in Pueblo are interesting and a bit more promising. Looks like the cofferdam is still in place for more work on the back pool. Can only hope that back pool stands up the wave. Too bad only info we are getting on “Pueblo’s New Wave” is from vids shot from afar. Hopefully the locals will make sure the final build results in a wave that rivals Scout in Salida. Can’t think of a more deserving surf scene that needs to grow to its full potential.
Enough for the rants. Keep an eye on Sixx if you got the proper neoprene for today and Saturday. Otherwise Sunday might the warmer day if the flow holds.
