Surf Forecast for Weekend 7/29-30/2023

Dry Sat/Sun with afternoon rain possible. One forecast shows heavier monsoons next week while other forecasts call for dry weather.

Chatfield Reservoir is basically full and it seems almost a third of the normal water calls have not been made yet. Cross our fingers for something surfable at RRP soon! Will send out the Chatfield releases each day as soon as we get the official word.

By the way it was confirmed that Brent Schantz who was the water commissioner for the S. Platte has indeed retired and the new commissioner has yet to be announced. Again, we wish Mr. Schantz a good retirement and thanks for being the person who sent us surfable flows through RRP the seven or so years.

Brent Schantz from 2011 to 2023, was the South Platte River Operations and Compact Coordinator for the Colorado Division of Water Resources. (2019 Photo by Kevin Simpson, The Colorado Sun)

Beavers was surfed Friday by Mr Mike and visiting Gunnison local & river surf advocate, Jason Lakey.

Dave’s Wave was surfed this week by Mark DeNittas.

Matty hit Bingo Wave in Golden while Golden citizens meditated in the Eddy pool.

Everyone is surfing Scout Wave.. When will you?!?

PLACES TO SURF: Beavers. 16th Street. Dave’s Wave. Scout Wave. Montrose. Maybe Bingo Wave.

NEWS: JOB Surfs Scout Wave

Yes, JOB (Jamie O’Brien) former competitive Hawaiian pro surfer and now YouTube star showed up to surf Scout Wave in Salida Friday. If you got a chance to watch him surf in person or on the live Scout cam, it was amazing. Looking forward to seeing the Scout Wave episode on JOB’s YouTube channel: https://youtube.com/@JamieOBrienJOB

RIVER SURFING TIP: Scout Wave in Salida is still excellent to surf but the flow is slowly dropping. If I were you, I’d surf Scout before August 15th when the VFMP flow will likely decrease. SURF TRIVIA: What famous surf break does JOB live next to?

PRIOR SURF TRIVIA ANSWER: In 1906, Thomas Edison was the first person to film surfing. See the surfing footage by Edison at the 1:14 minute/seconds time stamp in this vid below…
