Surf Forecast for Sunday 7/23/23

Local surf drops, however; Beavers, 16th Street, and Dave’s Wave are still surfable with bigger boards. RRP looks unlikely today as there is not much in water calls; but, will update when Chatty official release info is announced later today.

Monsoonal moisture has retreated southward from Wyoming/Colorado into New Mexico over the weekend with a possible gradual increasing monsoons throughout the Four Corners region early next week. Can only hope the local dry forecast for Denver changes over the upcoming days.

The front ranger surfers are hitting Scout today and there is talk of more headed to Salida next week.

LINKS TO WATCH:

Dave’s Wave gauge (about 3 hours off since the closest gauge is way down river. So look at prior day’s gauge amount and adjust your mind…. i.e 3pm Friday should likely be noon Sat current conditions… Need at least 200cfs to surf Dave’s on a longboard or inflatable): https://dwr.state.co.us/Tools/StationsLite/PLAHENCO?params=DISCHRG1

Chatfield gauge (takes 2-3 hours to impact RRP; click on raw/all values then table view for 15 min updates to flow levels): https://dwr.state.co.us/Tools/StationsLite/PLACHACO?params=DISCHRG

RRP gauge (click on raw/all values then table view for 15 min updates to flow levels) flow below 130cfs or so means it is too low for Sixx: https://dwr.state.co.us/Tools/StationsLite/PLAUNICO?params=DISCHRG

PLACES TO SURF:

Beavers. 16th Street Wave. Dave’s Wave. Scout Wave. Montrose.

RIVER SURFING TIP: Those up river of our waves have priority over us surfing… Sure, we like to play “chicken” and “Frogger” with anyone about to drop into the waves but actually this is not cool… Be careful of tubers and swimmers. (If you hit one, it is your fault/liability)…. When boaters want to navigate the wave, get off the wave quickly, and let them concentrate on getting thru the wave. In particular, give commercial rafts (w/ paddling customers), private boats, and kayakers total clear passage and DO NOT STAY ON THE WAVE…. Currently at the Scout Wave, there have been some not so kind words from raft guides directed at surfers for not showing the upriver safety respect for the boaters…. (More on this later with a news reporter who was doing interviews in Salida recently about the Scout Wave.)

SURF TRIVIA: Who invented the “boogieboard”?

PRIOR SURF TRIVIA ANSWER: Currently one of the best female surfers, Carissa Moore pulled off an air reverse during a World Surf League (WSL) event that has never been done before in major women’s competition! Click on the pic below for a videos of it happening..
