Surf Forecast for Sat 7/22/23

Chatfield Reservoir release will remain at 60 cfs today, Saturday, July 22, 2023.

(Sorry about date mess ups yesterday. Phone service was glitchy at Scout so corrections were not made.)

Late rains hit yesterday again around Denver but not in the right spots or amounts to get a proper gutter bump. Though Sixx looked almost surfable on the cam this AM (see tips below).

Weather is dry next few days. But you never know if the farmers will be getting water that we can surf as the ground dries up

Unlike years past where season dies off in RRP and people did not know where to go surf more or even felt it was worth it, Scout wave is filling that gap this season…. I’m not one to push travel; but, Scout is less than three hours from metro-Denver and worth it! Like a big Sixx that is easy to get on, easy to surf, and easy to get out of when you kick out or fall.

LINKS TO WATCH:

Dave’s Wave gauge (about 3 hours off since the closest gauge is way down river. So look at prior day’s gauge amount and adjust your mind…. i.e 3pm Friday should likely be noon Sat current conditions… Need at least 200cfs to surf Dave’s on a longboard or inflatable): https://dwr.state.co.us/Tools/StationsLite/PLAHENCO?params=DISCHRG1

Chatfield gauge (takes 2-3 hours to impact RRP; click on raw/all values then table view for 15 min updates to flow levels): https://dwr.state.co.us/Tools/StationsLite/PLACHACO?params=DISCHRG

RRP gauge (click on raw/all values then table view for 15 min updates to flow levels) flow below 130cfs or so means it is too low for Sixx: https://dwr.state.co.us/Tools/StationsLite/PLAUNICO?params=DISCHRG

Scout Wave gauge (1,200cfs or lower is surfable): https://dwr.state.co.us/Tools/StationsLite/ARKSALCO?params=DISCHRG

PLACES TO SURF:

Beavers. 16th Street Wave. Dave’s Wave. Scout Wave. Montrose.

RIVER SURFING TIP: Sixx indicators; The surfing visual “indicators” for Sixx (if shaped enough) are the triangles and fish ladder…. It is hard to see on a phone or even your computer via the pole cam, but there are two static triangles mounted on the side walls about 1/4 to 1/2 way up from the wave itself that help shape the wave. If those are covered with flowing water (none showing) then Sixx is surfable. Or when looking at the cam, if the fish ladder on surfers right (river left) has water flowing through it, it is likely surfable (shaping taken into consideration).

SURF TRIVIA: What maneuver did Carissa Moore pull off during one of the World Surf League (WSL) events that has never been done before in major women’s competition?

PRIOR SURF TRIVIA ANSWER: Jeff Crawford won the Pipemasters (Hawaii) in 1974 putting Florida surfing on the map as a potential powerhouse for pro surfers to come generations later.
