RRP Needs Additional WaveShaper Volunteers- Here is how you can help!

There are currently five (5) active RRP “WaveShaper Volunteers“, all who have day jobs. These volunteers have done wonders to keep an eye on the WaveShapers at Sixx and Benihana’s to keep us surfing over the seasons, especially this epic surf season of 2023. They often skip time away from their home-life and work-life responsibilities to tune up the river surf waves for our surfing pleasure. But with that said, we are obviously in need of additional workday hour WaveShaper Volunteers. The City of Englewood currently manages the WaveShaper cadre for RRP on behalf of City of Sheridan and other governmental stakeholders.

If you agree that RRP needs daytime/workweek hours WaveShaper Volunteers, here are three things you can do. (Last two, all of us can do)

  1. Sign-up on the Englewood Volunteer database and make it known you are willing to become a WaveShaper Volunteer and are able to be on call for business workweek daytime hours of dawn to end of business hours (M-F 6am to 6pm). Here is the Volunteer Application form at the bottom of this link https://www.englewoodco.gov/our-city/volunteer-opportunities
  2. Contact the City of Englewood and respectfully let them know that RRP is in need of more WaveShaper Volunteers who can specifically commit to business daytime hours Monday thru Friday…. E-mail: City of Englewood Director of Parks/Recreation/Library/Golf Department Christina Underhill cunderhill@englewoodco.gov, and copy with this e-mail address volunteer@englewoodco.gov
  3. Next time you see Ocky at RRP, thank him as the lead WaveShaper Volunteer for his and the cadre of WaveShaper Volunteers work in shaping the waves. Then politely suggest that we are in need of more WaveShaper Volunteers for workday hours. Oh and if you are willing to be a WaveShaper Volunteer, let Ocky know you are interested.
Ask for more WaveShapers

Comments are open about need for more workday WaveShaper Volunteers, be cool.

  1. You David want volunteers but you yourself won’t even do it?? Explain that logic because you have been offered a role on the shaping team. You’re retired and have all this free time for a surf report that says we need more and the 7/8 people that have access to the shapers!

    1. F u, good question and thanks for asking…. Yes I was once offered the shaper volunteer position a couple of years ago and at the time I explained that, those who lived closer to RRP who were interested in volunteering should have gotten the positions and they did. Also, I am semi-retired and do have work that at times that would have got in the way of shaping duties. Lastly, at the time we had requested four (4) volunteer shaper positions and were only given two (2)… The current shaper volunteer cadre all have day jobs and have done a good job of keeping us surfing in 2023, but RRP needs some daytime volunteers. Multiple people have asked me how to get the volunteer position and I have directed them to the person who has more say than I do for shaper volunteer positions. But with that said, there has to be an official way to sign-up for potential waveshaper volunteer positions; and, we have every right to ask the City for more waveshaper volunteers, hence this blog posting…. Currently there are five (5) active waveshaper volunteers. So if you are correct that there are seven to eight (7/8) waveshaper volunteers that have access to shapers, that means there are 2-3 unfilled positions or at least there are 2-3 waveshapers volunteers that should be replaced as shaper volunteers… Apparently there was one shaper who no longer lives in Colorado who the key was taken from him, so that spot should be filled. There is another potential shaper who works for the golf course that we have never seen shaping. And that leaves a third mystery shaper. So, let’s get those 2-3 wave shaper volunteer spots filled with people who can commit to day time hours. Thanks, LBK

  2. David,
Thank you for your passion and energy for River Run park and the surf community.

At this time, the City of Englewood/South Suburban Parks and Recreation are not looking to bring on any new volunteers for the season.

With that, if anyone is interested, please have them reach out to me, or any of the team, and we will add you to an interest list for future consideration.

    Regards,
    Ocky G

    1. Ocky, thanks for the update and your professionalism.. much appreciated…

Agree that this season is likely covered off on and the City of Englewood and South Suburban Park and Rec aren’t looking for current additional volunteers.. But we need to look to next season with a full cadre of shapers to help out and replace the ones who are not actively shaping.

By all counts, means there are 2-3 open positions that we can hopefully fill for 2024 surf season particularly with daytime available folks during the work week.

Will encourage anyone interested in shaping volunteer work to reach out to you and to put their name on the volunteer list (as any other person wanting to volunteer for any service to Englewood) with the link in the original posting.

Maybe we can talk off-line about how to best get the cities of Englewood/Sheridan along with South Suburban Park and Rec to buy in for 2-3 shaper volunteers to replace the ones gone or not actively involved in shaping the waves at RRP for the 2024 season… Peace.

      1. David,
Yes, let’s definitely have a conversation about it and anything else you want to discuss. I think, us having a conversation with context would be much a great thing. You let me know when, whether by riverside, or over a coffee.

Have a great week, and again–Thank you for all your passion for the community!!!

        Regards,
        Ocky G
