Forecast for Sat 5/20/23 (Miracle Wave?)

Benni’s is in. Miracle Wave at Chatfield Dam might be in.

Miracle Wave possibly is surfable and seems to come in about every 3 years. Photo from River Surf Report

Chatfield is releasing close to 900cfs. Sixx is blown out and Benni’s is fun with a bit of a hairy current to deal with when coming unstuck off the wave. You can make it to the edges of the river but you might have to go through the center of Chilclets.

Make sure before you surf that you eye up Benni’s, Chiclets, and make a mental plan on how to properly flush through Chiclets if need be… Go through the center of Chiclet’s wave and not to the sides (especially if you have a leash on). Truth is you are safer without a leash and even at higher flows you can get to your board in the eddys.

Other waves such as Trestles might be in but bring a friend who knows swift water rescue and bring a heavy dose of caution. Link to Trestle’s Wave details: http://endlesswaves.net/waves/trestle-wave/

As for Miracle Wave, it is a wide mellow glassy longboard wave over shallow rocks that will hurt when you fall. Watch for foot entrapments and leash risks. Bring a vest because the park rangers might write a ticket for no vests. People have surfed it at 900cfs but really needs to be over a thousand cfs.

Be safe tomorrow and keep an eye on the gauges.
