Know the dangers and be prepared. Surfing with a rope is becoming more prevalent at river waves. Even if you have a safety plan in mind, would strongly suggest NOT doing it. An entanglement means being dragged under water and held down in a likely deadly situation.

At the very least have a knife in close proximity and someone positioned to use it to cut the rope in the event the surfer gets tangled in the rope.
If you use a leash and a rope, you have really upped the accident/death factor. Don’t be lulled into thinking you are safe with the use of a so called “quick release” leash, even if you know how to automatically deploy the release mechanism in a split second chance to save yourself.
(Note, a surfer recently went to pull their quick release and the ball part pulled off but the mechanism did not release.…)
-If you use a rope, be mindful, eyes are watching you and will copy you.
-If you use a rope, pull the rope out of the water between rides. Don’t want to entangle other surfers.
-If you use a rope, know the dangers to you and others…. After all you set your own risk tolerances but not for others.
-Use of a rope (or not) is a personal choice. Be cool and be safe!
