Denver metro area surfers are much like others surfers who somehow found themselves thousands of miles away from their passion of surfing the ocean. Might have been for work, for life events, for the mountains, or whatever. Though unlike landlocked surfers in most other parts of the country, Denver has river surfing. Sure it is not ocean surfing in so many ways; but, river surfing can feed that surfing addiction.
River surfing is not as easy as it looks and the water is moving in the wrong direction. But when you figure out the turns on a nice green faced waves, that ocean surfing part of your brain turns on and it feels surprisingly similar to ocean surfing.
Head on up to Wave Sixx, the furthest river wave at River Run Park during the season to check out the wave when it is in, typically 125cfs or more. Check river gauge “SOUTH PLATTE RIVER BELOW UNION AVE, AT ENGLEWOOD,C (PLAUNICO)“ and take a glance at the pole cam for Wave Sixx that updates still photos every 15 minutes from 5am to 8pm 7 days a week. And make a plan to learn to river surf in Metro-Denver to satisfy that need to surf.
